Keys to Find the Right Home for You

Updated: Feb 27, 2019

It can be very overwhelming when you shop for a home.  There are so many options out there, it can be hard to pick just one.  Follow these keys to find the right home for you.

1. Stay in your budget-  This may be the most important one!  It can be very tempting to buy a home over your budget, but always keep in mind what your monthly payment will be.  If you have a 30-year fixed rate mortgage, you will be paying that same amount for the next 30 years, or as long as you own the home.  Make sure it is an amount you feel comfortable paying.  Don’t forget that you can always do renovations later, which could improve the value of your home, but you should always start with a home that is well within your budget.  If you need help determining what that is, talk to a lender or financial adviser.  They will be able to guide you in the right direction.

2. Living in the moment- Often times, when people are ready to buy a home, they think way too far in advance at what their life could become down the road.  They are currently single, with no kids, but want to buy a home for the spouse and children they may one day have.  While it’s great to think ahead, don’t get too carried away.  Buy for the life you have now, not one you might have in ten years.  Remember, the average length of a mortgage is five years.  Hopefully when the time comes for you to upgrade, you can build on the equity from your current home.

3. Indoors or outdoors- This a big decision, especially in Tucson.  If you would rather occupy yourself with indoor activities, then you should look for a home that allows you inside space to do so.  If you enjoy being outside, then you should look for a home with more land.  It doesn’t necessarily need to be a luxurious oasis but it at least needs to have the space for you to make it your own.  Maybe you love to garden or want to have a place to drink your morning coffee.  Whatever it is, make sure the home you buy has the space that will allow you to create it.

4. Mountain view vs city view- You may not even realize you have a preference until after you have purchased your home.  In Tucson we are so fortunate to have these options but it can be hard to choose.  Unlike renovations or upgrades, you won’t be able to change your view.

The key to finding the right home for you is to realize what makes you happy.  Also keep in mind that some features of a home can be changed and some can’t.  Make sure you are happy with the permanent features of your home and you are sure to find the perfect home for you!
